are D. auratus morphs gentic or regional

micahdenton Mar 06, 2005 03:20 PM

are the D. auratus color morphs simple receise gentic traits or are they a regional pattern morgh of multiple allies. I known that people tend to frown on crossing the dart frogs but if you breed a black and blue auratus to a black and green do you get normals het for blue or intergrades. don't mean to annoy any body just woundering.

That's a good question. I believe the color variants adhere to the simple Mendelian principle, as do most lower vertebrates, but others may certainly know more about it than I. I've only read one experiement with D. ventrimaculatus where the experimenter crossed an albino (known recessive) with a normal colored frog (dominant) and continued for several generations, proving that at least in this case, it was as straightforward Mendel and his peas.
