dmlove or anyone please

braveheart Mar 06, 2005 04:02 PM

hi again..im sorta posting same question again hoping ill get an answer on it,,hopefully dmlove or an experienced keeper like sean will see it...

ok here goes,my beardys are sleeping all day and eateing has slowed down..one just digs all day..like hes trying to get out viv..its like he or she is swimming into the side of viv..now i think i accidently put them into brumation of some sort..as i changed my timer unit and never realised that they were getting less light than usuall..this was like this for 2 weeks..about 2 hours less than they were used to..ive now put the new timer back to normal..but they still arent eating very much..so heres my questions guys please

can you stop brumation after 2 weeks?????

and as there only one year old will they keep growing now after this...???????

as i read if they start brumation that they stop growing forever no matter what size??????

and is there a dsiffrence in size between males and females???
as my small one is now bigger than my big one if that makes sense

im sorry for all the questions but as i said in last post im having to go to friends house to use computer so cant do a question at time
im very worried as theyre not eating alot etc

Hi - I don't have a beardie yet, but while doing my research (getting one soon)I came across these two articles on brumation. Maybe they can help answer some questions until you hear from someone on the forum.

Hey - It does indeed sound a little bit like brumation, even this late in the year. The barometic pressures are still a little in the "winter mode" if that makes sense, so some dragons feel brumating is still good to go.
Are they housed together? The one digging could possibly be gravid if thats the case. Or (s)he could be just looking for a place to settle down. Brumation definetly can be stopped after two weeks, but it really depends on the dragon and what it wants to do. They will continue to grow, it may just slow down if they do go into brumation, but will speed back up once they are out of brumation. As they get older towards 1 1/2 - 2 years old, they begin to slow down growing anyway. You really dont judge the sex of the dragon by the size, as I know some huge dragons that are both females and males. Really depends on their genetics. You can, if you have a camera, hold the dragons facing away from you on your forearm, and lift their tail perpendicular to their body carefully and take a clear photo. If we see photos like that we could probably sex them for you. Keep offering food and give them a good warm soak to hydrate them. Send a fecal to the vet just to make sure parasites is out of the question.

Update us soon!

Good luck!

so do you think he will stay the biggest or will the other start really growing again..???????????

That sounds good. I would suggest pick the one that appeals to you the most : i.e. Color, personality, etc. If fed the right diet, they can get just as big (im assuming you bought them from the same breeder - siblings possibly).

Good luck!

can i ask why you'll be seperating them soon? i mean if the've been doing well together especially from being together since 4 weeks old. i'd probably would let them stay together. was just wondering why exactly you would seperate them. plz reply because i soon plan to get my beardie a friend other than i

As they get older, the male especially can become sexually active, trying to breed with the female, and it can become extremely stressful. As they get bigger as well, feeding time and basking time can make a very stressfull for them.

They are solitary animals, and unless you have an extreme amount of space, they are best kept alone.
