Genetic problems? Suggestions?

Tegan Jul 08, 2003 01:43 PM

I was hoping to get some suggestions on what I should do, and hopefully you'll all see that I'm trying to do what is best for the little leo. So be kind to me, this is a hard choice.

I'm trying to decide if I should put my little leo to sleep or not.

His background is fairly simple. I had two blizzard leos that bred and laid one fertile and one infertile egg. I incubated at 89 degrees (Note I dont know if it's male or female as I haven't checked but I'm calling it a boy). He hatched out 2 weeks earlier then he should have. He has one deformed eye and one normal eye and seems to have some sort of nurological problems. (Walks with a very jerky motion and seems to have trouble keeping his balance). He has grown but not as well as he should (At 4 months old he's about half the size he should be). He doesn't seem to have trouble catching his food though and eats like a champ.

So there it sits. He seems to be eating fine and drinking fine, but he's haveing a lot of trouble getting around. I worry that he is in pain and I dont want him to suffer for the rest of his life.

What would you do?

Well, seeing that you incubated it at a higher temp, it probably is a male. The neurological problems would make life pretty unpleasant, but then again he is eating well and managing fine. It really depends on what you think is kinder. He is surviving, but is he enjoying it? (sadly, geckos can't tell us what they are feeling). I really don't know what to tell you. If you are really caught up in this dilemma, I would take him to the vet and see what the vet thinks you should do (vets are usually pretty smart when it comes to decisions like this). If your vet is a good one, and you trust them, I would do what they say. Good luck!
