people in florida releasing burms make me sick

um Mar 06, 2005 10:18 PM

I just hate how people are releasing their burms in the wild. It's terrible. Besides their size i heard burms arn't bad pets. How stupid could someone be to release a pet like that into the wild? IT MAKES ME SICK!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

stupid should hurt.

other states as well, they just don't make it past winter.

Which is much worse IMHO...

I think the breeders and re-sellers are partially responsible.
They can tell when someone buys a burm at a show that they are
too young, but they sell them anyway. It seems to me that most
of the people who end up buying burms are young teens...

It does... Unfortunately it hurts us more than them.

I went looking around the classified ads last night because I wanted to see the axanthic burm someone mentioned, and I was surprised how zealous the ads are, and how little warning there is about size. The only time I saw size mentioned was in reference to some dwarf retics. I wonder how many of the sellers there are at all aware, or even interested, in what's going on in the Everglades. At least two ads said "this one will make you money if you breed it enough," but I didn't see one ad that said, "Please don't release this animal into the woods behind your house."

I'm pretty certain, that someone spending $40K on a snake wont be releasing this one "into the woods behind the house."
It's the $35 snakes that get released there.

honestly, who is going to give a run down of the species in an ad? firstly, its assumed that coming to kingsnake.com classifieds, you know what your looking for and have done your research. its the purchaser who is responsible for learning about the animal, not the seller who is responsible for teaching the purchaser. now granted, a responsible seller does not sell to anyone who doesnt seem to know what they are getting into, but to be sure of anything they would have to give the person a book, then give them a test on it a week later, plus run a credit check to make sure they were financially able to support the animal, among other things, before even selling the animal t the person.... its unrealistic.

Let's put this as simple as possible....

NOONE should have to post, NOT to release the animal behind your house. If you dont regularly see that particular animal behind your house, then that's not where it is supposed to be.

McCloskey Mar 07, 2005 09:21 PM

Well, maybe people will start to reconsider this kind of thing if/when they ban burms in Florida, and then other states whose climate can support these animals start to follow suit. I mean, once pics of a burm being eaten by an alligator showed up in the NYTimes, people knew something was wrong, and legislation can be quick when you don't have your own lobby.
