Is she a carrot tail and ? about feeding.

waldo Mar 07, 2005 10:13 AM

This is Raziel, she is around a year old now and weighing in at 80 grams.I was wondering if she would be considered a carrot tail? she has quite a bit of orange on her body but it never shows up in the picture.

Raziel as a baby

Also she has lost her appetite recently, she was eating 3-4 superworms everynight and now she has gotten real picky and only eats a mealworm or two every few days. She isn't losing weight and is active still.Could it be because she is done growing and doesn't need to eat so much?

Looks like a pretty carrot tail to me.... As long as the carrot is not broken up by spots on the tail base it a carrot tail.... She looks real nice....

I do not think it is a very healthy sign..... Only because every leo I have ever had, never lost theirs..... One or two mealworms is not good..... Full grown adults need much more than that..... The only time I have leos go off feed it about a week or two at most before laying eggs and then they go right back to feeding like crazy inbetween clutches.....

How long has she been not eating as much as she has????

Did she slow down gradualy or was it almost over night????

Has she been kept with a male or in a room where there are other leos breeding????

its been about three weeks, and it was gradual. She's starting to show interest in crickets and has eaten a few in the last couple of days, plus a waxworm here or there.I don't have any males so no worries there unless its possible for a female to develope eggs with no male around? I've hed her since last August and she hasn'r been around any other leos.could it have taken this long for a disease to show up? I'm going to weight her today and make sure she isn't losing weight.

Some disease and/or parasites don't show up for a long time. One of my leos i aquired from a pet store carried pinworms and i wouldn't have had any clue it did until i got a fecal done on it 3 1/2 months after i got it. It was still eating, gaining weight, a bad shed here and there and it was pretty healthy. He is being treated with panacur right now so all is good. And it is possible for a female to develope eggs even though it has no came into any contact with a male. They will be infertile and you can throw them out.

I was wondering about worms but I have no way to find out.The closest herp vet is over 100 miles away (I live in the middle of nowhere) and money is just way too tight right now.
I did find a local vet who will help me with the proper dose of panacur if I decide to go that route but she won't examine my leo.Is it worth it to try the panacur even without a diagnosis? I weighed raziel today and she has lost 5 grams in the last month.

~I AM NOT A VET SO DONT TAKE MY ADVICE AS A DISAGNOSIS~
Im not certain that panacur can be given without a diagnosis, but the side effects from Panacur are low and almost unheard of. to calculate the dosage you get the weight of the reptile in grams. multiply that by .0005 for a 50 mg/kg dose or mult. weight by .001 for 100 mg/kg dosage, (the dosages was given to me by Veronica from Beautiful Dragons when i purchased panacur from her site)

Have you ever thought that maybe it's nothing and she's just taking a break from eating. I know some leos get "bored" with the food you give them or they know they aren't underweight so they just stop eating for no apparent reason. They start eating again and everything goes back to normal after about a couple of weeks. 5g doesn't seem like alot of weight loss for a month, I would wait and see if she starts eating on her own especially since there's no herp vet around you.

Have you checked to see if she is ovulating? I have some females that go off feed when they ovulate; this is a fairly widespread phenomena. Look for two round whitish or pinkish masses about mid body.

My female has been eating very badly for the last couple of weeks. A cricket here, a waxworm and a couple of silkworms(that I bought especially to try and get her to eat) and that's it.

She shed last night but I don't know if that is a sign that she's doing well or not. I also live in the middle of nowhere and my regular vet won't touch exotics because he doesn't feel comfortable treating them and the rest of the vets I called are large animal vets who take care of cows and horses.

I've treated my Guinea Pigs for mites in the past with Ivomectin so I'm thinking of giving her a panacur treatment and see how it goes.
