Few questions on eggs and growth

oddballpythons Mar 07, 2005 10:49 AM

My first question is, after ovulation does she get fatter and fatter up until she lays or does she pretty much stay the same size. I just want to get an idea of how many eggs she could have in her. Also I have a female about 500 grams and I don't want to breed her until she is well over 2000 grams on empty. She eats like crazy, how long do you think it will take for her to get over that mark. I want to see if waiting until they are over that size if it effects clutch size average over the first few years of breeding.

[...assuming she's not eating anything (or drinking excessively)]
Your female will not gain weight. Her weight will likely get
re-distributed to make her look larger in certain areas, but
without eating or drinking she cannot gain weight.

If your other female is 500g and eating a lot (once or more than
once per week), she can be up to breeding size in the fall of '05
or early '06. Note: My definition of 'breeding size' is any female
that is over ~1400g with great body mass.

In general, larger females will lay larger clutches. But not
always! My experience has shown that an animal that is ~1500g
can lay anywhere from 4-8 eggs. A female that is ~2500g will
usually give ~6-10 eggs. Of course, these are just rules-of-thumb.
There are always exceptions.

Good luck,
Chris Simone
