reporting illegal sulcata sales?

noori Mar 07, 2005 02:04 PM

One of the area pet stores has at least two 1.5 inch baby sulcatas for sale. Should I report this? They were selling baby sulcatas a couple years ago which were maybe 2.5 inches. These look like they were just hatched. I haven't seen them sell any other under four inch torts. If I should report this, who should I call? I'm in southeast WI. What would happen to the baby sulcatas?

What would be the benefit of reporting such a usless infraction?

I bet if you go back to that store they probably have a little writen disclaimer saying "turtles under 4 inches for educational and research use only" ... there are more important things to worry about than starting a fight with your local pet store.

Exactly WHO will bennifit from you reporting them? Honestly this is obsurd! Selling baby tortoises SHOULD be legal anyway! Honestly! If you report the person the torts end up confiscated by Animal control or WORSE fish and wildlife! Neither Animal control nor Fish and Wildlife have a CLUE as to the proper captive care of these animals and they would be in danger of starvation and other health risks while under their care. It's been noted on several occasions that confiscated animals are returned to the original owners (once the owners were found to be not guilty) in horrendous conditions!

Leave the poor Pet Shop owner be! He/she is trying to squeek out a living as best as they can in an already difficult to stay alive in business.

Sounds to me that you need to concentrate more on keeping YOUR animals healthy and not worry so much about what others are doing.

I was in north central wisconsin, (tomahawk) and a pet store had hatchling RES's, they were so cute and I've never seen anything but adult animals. I wasn't sure if it was legal to sell them or not but as I had no problems with any of the animals husbandry I didn't feel it was necessary to do anything.

I am an owner of a pet shop in CA and I can tell you with experience that the fish and wildlife as well as animal control doesn’t give a rats a** about the ridicules 4" law.
They both told me "don’t worry about it... is a ridicules law and we don’t really enforce it anyways” Yes they do come by from time to time and why do they do it? because people like you who have nothing better to do then be "want-to-be" rent a cops who's only satisfaction in life is to conform to what the media tells you should do and be... and when they tell you that a turtle or tortoise less then 4" poses a grave treat you "yes sir" and march out like dump a**es and petrol your local pet shop and hope you can be a good Samaritan and do good for the world.
anyhow... when the fish and wildlife come by they do so because they have to respond to a report and when they do arrive, they say "hi" again just like they did last week and go back to doing their job... you know like protecting the public from strays and trying to adopt those animals that are crowding the kennels out so they don’t have to be euphonized.
They don’t confiscate anything, they don’t want to! But they have to waist 2 hours of their day to make the trip down and back because people like you who, I’ll say it once again, have nothing better to do with your time then make life harder then it is for others.
GET A HOBBY for goodness sakes!
Anyhow... I think I am done venting...
In short, don’t you think a person whose going to buy a baby sucata will have done his/her homework and read up on it before spending $60-$90 bucks? Not to mention the information I have provided them with? Who do you think you are protection from the baby sulcatas from anyways?
