I thought this C.I.T.E.S 2 thing was supposed to help the leaf tails but insted of that it has only made them more desirable and it dosen't seem to have slowed down importation. Isn't it ironic how as soon as a animal becomes more rare people want it all the more. Just last year I saw a guy who had 2 cb henkeli and only wanted about 100 bucks for them each. He had the classified ad up for months and nobody wanted them so he just kept them. Since this C.I.T.E.S 2 thing I have never seen more novices get into leaf tails. I get tons of emails from people about cork-barks that don't even understand the basic care of uroplatus. So sad! At this rate you can count on endangerment of the entire genus in a short period of time. I suggest they move them all to C.I.T.E.S 1.

I get at LEAST 10 inquiries a week about people wanting to buy Uroplatus, mostly phantasticus. Many of them "want one for their kid." Or want to know where to get them cheap. My feeling is, if you have been around long enough to research properly, you will know where to get them "cheap." Its infuriating, really. I feel like these people have absolutely no respect for the animals, especially just wanting to buy with no idea how to care for them.

ive been into reptiles for over 5 years now. ive got cresteds gargoyles , bearded dragons , tons of boas n pythons ,and breed most of them, so i am by no means a newbie to reptiles. I was at a local pet store in december, n they had had a mislabeled henkeli ( they said it was a fimbriatus) it had been there for easily 7 months , probably more , n i just felt so bad for the creature , i bought it , and it really sparked my interest in leaf tails. I didnt know about this whole cites 2 and 1 deal going on though back then. Now i know all about it , and i guess i can be considered one of those newbies that want them now, but i really love them for their beauty. sure them being endangered seems kind of cool , but their exotic looks , and wonderful colors , i would have bought them back when they were 35 bucks , just cuz they are awesome looking. I am a responsible herper , and take very good care of my animals. I know quite a few people who deal w reptile importation , and i know where to get the good deals. I just wanted to state that not all of us newbies , so u call it , are into it just cuz they are rare , some of us truly have a newfound passion and general respect for the family uroplatus as a whole.just my 2 cents.

I personally have liked leaf tails for eons..since I first saw one in print, YEARS ago..but never could recall their name. I only just learned about them a few years ago. Had I known they were in the trade I would have been into them much longer than a few years.

But your comments aren't surprising to me in terms of your observations.

I saw my first leaftail a year ago and I fell in love with them. It was a henkel and since then I got another female and a male. I am trying my luck at breeding but mainly they are just my pets. It is sad though how people can just all of a sudden want them just because they are rare. I feel so bad for all the mistreated leaftails out there just because people didn't know what they were getting themselves into. I'm no expert though. I just recently acquired two corkbark leaftails! I've been wanting some for awhile and I finally came across two and couldn't pass them up.
