whats the best lid for a dart tank?

jaysnakes Mar 07, 2005 08:48 PM

Hi everyone I have been pulling some ideas together for starting my first dart vivarium. I have made red-eye ones in the past so I feel pretty well off but have one small question. What types of lids do you use on your glass vivariums. I have always in the past made my lids out of wood with a fluoresent light hood on top. I was wondering what most people use and prefer for their darts.

Thanks

Jay

I get glass from the local glass shop and make a lid myself using piano hinges (plastic hindges) that you can buy at peaceofthetropics.com.

Since all of my vivariums are made from glass aquariums, I buy the hinged glass tops that fit the tank size. The only problems with these are I think they are over-priced, and you need to make sure the back plastic flap is taped down securely, as I've had a couple of darts squeeze out under them and escape. On the other hand, you can cut notches or holes in this for electric cords or tubing. If your house gets hot in summer, you may want to put a screen under the front portion so you can cock or open the front lid for ventilation and cooling. I put a section of wet terrycloth towel over the screen, maybe add some ice cubes and blow a small fan over this, although in my neck of the woods, this is seldom needed. If you have central air conditioning, there's probably no problem and you don't need the screen.
