Attn:User with tubes under sand

I'm looking for the poster that has the elaborate PVC tubing system under the substrate. Before and after pics would be great as well as any tips you can provide. I want to make something similar in my mali's cage.

Thanks in advance!

I think that may be me, but I didn't use PVC piping. I used aluminium dryer vent tubing. The tubes are easy to work with and very resistant to uro nails The pipes are connected to a Ziploc sandwich container partially filled with moistened substrate. This artificial burrow setup has had a positive effect on both of my uros. They do run and hide in the burrow if I startle them but they usually don't hide for long (or they'll come out of the other pipe instead). When they are out, they are a lot friendlier towards me knowing that their hiding spot is never too far away.
My initial setup originally had 2 hide boxes but they didn't use the one with the single entrance much at all (I guess they prefer multiple entrances to their burrows) so I used it for a brumation chamber for my male in his brumation tank (that worked well).

Here's a pic of my original setup without the substrate added

Here is how it looks with the substrate added.

And here's my male sleeping winter away in his brumation chamber. My female didn't want to brumate (due to an operation she needed to have) and I didn't want to lower the temps in the tank so I moved Ra to the 40-gallon tank and made the temp changes there (I call it the brumation tank). Using Doug Dix's method for brumation, the process went perfectly.

Here is the brumation chamber

Did you have to do anything to the edges of the aluminum tubes to eleminate sharp edges? During the brumation period, did you still have the lights coming on for shorter day cycles? Gus's favorite hide is a rock that he can enter from either end as well. I agree, they seem to like having both an in and out opening. I noticed Doug Dix makes his low hides with that same feature.

My egyptian has brumated every winter without fail. He seems to know what time of year it is without any inside temperature changes to his habitat. I actually shorten his day cycles after he gives me the cue in October/November time frame. About 3 weeks ago he came out and within a week developed quite an appetite. I'd sware he's already grown another inch if it weren't for the fact that he hasn't had a full shed lately. He's looking great though.

Thanks,
Craigo

You can run, but you can't hide... unless you're a uro

I used some non-toxic glue to seal the edges, the uros don't eat it. Ra has gone into brumation by himself (he stopped eating and started sleeping a lot more). I had a heat light on for a total of four hours during the day. He could still bask if he needed to but still spent most of the time sleeping. It does keep the gut functioning so you don't have to worry about necrosis. I didn't want to lower the tank temps and disrupt Isis's recovery.

yours was exactly the setup I remembered. I'll get right on his new setup. Can't wait to see what he thinks!
