Constipated snake

cmccartney Mar 08, 2005 12:49 AM

Our double het for snow boa constrictor seems to be suffering from constipation. We just cleaned his cage and it was really too clean. We were wondering if there was anything we could do besides just soaking him in warm water for a half hour. We can't really afford a vet but if that's the only way then we'll do it. But if anyone has any other suggestions besides soaking and vet help, please...HELP!

You have a het for snow boa and can't afford a vet? wow, just my first response, them snows are beautifull.

As far as snakes and constipation go, I don't get overly stressed out. I'm assuming this is a male? Temps, and husbandry or good? What is the feeding and defecating history on this animal?

A luke warm bath and a good swim should help but for now just keep an eye on it. It's hard to say exactly when to get worried, but if you generally feed, say once a week, and he defecates once a week, then perhaps 2-3 weeks. Watch temps closely, winter often cools the room enough where we don't notice, but it slows our herps a little.

If you can't afford a vet, then why do you have any animals? ALL animals WILL get sick and die, you need to prepare for that or stick to pets that don't require veterinary care (rock?).
