Help to I.D this snake

gothai Mar 08, 2005 03:37 AM

I went out into the water logged fields with my girlfriends brother and a torch last night.
Found three snakes (not bad huh?) but have no clue as to what this snake is.
From the photo it is mostly black with irregular white bands...the last one on the short stubby tail is actually red.
This snake was found in the water wrestling with a small freshwater eel.
It was probably about 30cm in length.

Any ideas?

Thanks, sorry forgot to mention that I am in the south of thailand...

so I searched Cylindrophis ruffus and the description and tail are definatly spot on...the only thing is that it doesn't include the white
half bands.
Could this be because the snake is a juvenile or just colour variation?

You are looking at the ventral side of the snake, which invariably has these black and white half-bands. The dorsum does not have them.

Cheers,

They actually get darker on top with age. I had a pair for many years. They don't usually aclimate well to captivity, but the ones that do are prolific eaters and have awesome personalities, one of my favorite snakes. They generally eat eels in the wild, but once they start eating, they'll eat anything that moves. Their jaws do not seperate like most snakes to eat larger prey, but they make up for it with biting power.
