Most of the "small" teiids are not fond of handling, and tend to be flighty. Although long ago I owned a gorgeous Ameiva that was incredibly calm and tolerated handling well.
As for tegus, checkout www.bluetegu.com and www.agamainternational.com, you can get all the stats on size, and care.
For the quick and dirty; tupinambis teguixin rarely exceed 4 feet. Not a taxonomist, but I believe this species designation covers the common Columbian Black and Whites, as well as the blues. Columbians tend to be flighty, but if you obtain a hatchling, you get a headstart on settling your animal.
Tubinambis Merianae is the Argentine Black and White, these are bigger, up to 4.5 feet and also tend to be more docile.
Tubinambis Refuscens (sp?)is the red tegu - similar to the Argentine black and white.
Keep in mind that you will need a substantial enclosure for any adult, a minimum of 6 feet long.
