Black Night Post .... revisted

toshamc Mar 08, 2005 12:37 PM

As I was about to spend another $40 on P-A-M to do cage cleanings this week (I use it on the bedding) I was thinking about the post about black night. Where are you all getting it, I've looked around and can't find it anywhere. How much does it cost? And can I spray it on the aspen like I do the P-A-M or does it just work directly on the animals? How long does it last? Thanks.

Monthly ... You can get it through pro exotics . I spray bedding and also in between monthly cleanings wipe down the outside of encloses and racks with it . It runs about $20 shipped .

I just spoke to pro exotic and they said they do not have any Black Night to sell. The court case is ongoing.

1) Take your aspen bedding and place on a large cookie sheet or baking pan.

2) Set oven to 350 F and allow to preheat.

3) Place bedding in oven.

4) Check every 15 minutes until golden brown....I mean...
wait until it gets up to almost 350, be careful not to burn it.

5) allow to cool completely

6) you now have sterile aspen shavings without any chemicals, enjoy!

(however, all of this is unecessary, since mites do not live in the bedding for extened periods of time (after a week or two they will all be dessicated and dead). So the stuff you buy at the store is already mite free, unless you buy it at a pet store that has mites (PetBlow). Ticks on the other hand can hang around for quite awhile, but the chances of you getting snake ticks from a bag of aspen shavings is pretty slim. Anyway, I still do it...an ounce of prevention is worth a pound of cure.

I will mention it was posted in the Burmese python forum about bad advise given on the internet. Since black night is not approved for safely treating reptiles it might not be the best idea to advise someone to use it. Provent-A-Mite is approved and many people (on here even) will be more willing to support its use.

Although Black Knight is not "approved" for use with reptiles, it is only opinion that it is not safe to use to rid reptiles of mites and ticks. Many, many, many, many people have used this product with great results and swear by it. It is my opinion that there is a lot of negative propanganda against BK and I will stick with using my hoard of BK. Hopefully it will be back on the market someday.
