My Outdoor Tegu Pen

bast Mar 08, 2005 05:28 PM

Here is an old photo of my ooutdoor tegu pen.
I can't wait for spring to take some new photos of
my outdoor pens. I'd like to try breeding tegus
therefore I'm looking for a Arg.B&W female to live
here with my big male. He is from Bert Langerwerf.
He is now a bit over 4 feet long and feels like 20 lbs
(but I haven't weighed him lately) He's gettign some
nice jowels...I love those jowels!

Thank you,

Brian

Sweet pen!!! At 3.5 feet and 5 lbs for a black and white, especially from Bert. You might want to kick his food intake up a bit. I'm sure he just came out of brumation if you kept him outside year-round, thus his wt. will be down. Most of my males (b/w's) averaged around 9 lbs at 3' to 3.5' and at 4' feet were 14 lbs on average.

Again, awesome pen for him!!!!!

That photo was from a couple of years ago. Elvis is now just over 4 feet long and about 20 lbs.

Here's another old picture. I'll take some new ones this spring and post them.

Thanks,

Brian

Is he still living in this enclosure? I dont see any shady spots in there for him to hang out in at the size he is now. With added height, I find most of my Tegus will bask for short times and then hide in the shade of the walls.

Elvis comes in for the winter. I haven't hibernated him because I have never tried to breed him. He'll be back out in a few weeks...if spring ever comes! There are stumps and logs that he digs under for shade. I also plant things like asparagus ferm to add some hiding places. Asparagus ferm is great. It is non-toxic, grows fast in full sun and last late into the autumn.

Here's another old photo. I'll take new photos in the spring and post them.

Thanks,

Brian

Elvis did gain wt., then. LOLOL That's awesome!!! The pic though didn't show him, unless he was hiding under his hide-spot.
I'm we all would love to see new pics of Elvis!!!

Take care!

What kind of temps. do you get there? Do you find he needs a high temp. basking area to digest food?

By the way, that is the coolest outdoor vivarium I've ever seen! Nice work.

Thanks,
Craigo

The summers are hot. Temps will get into the 80s and 90s. In the sun temps get very hot. We have REAL winters. None of these 45-50 degree "winters" that some of you guys "suffer" through. We've had several nights below zero this winter. It has been colder than normal with more snow that normal.

My Russian tortoises are out hibernating now. I cover the pens with fiberglass windows. It keeps them dry and on a sunny day it may be 10 degrees warmer under the windows. I'll try to take a winter photo now and post it.

Here is another old with the torts.

Thanks,

Brian
