egg-eaters and wolf snakes?

caecilianman02 Mar 08, 2005 06:36 PM

Who has kept these two species?

What advice can you give me on care, especially for the wolf snakes?

What egg eater is the smallest? What size tank is required?

Thanks!

With the 'egg eaters'...

Are you talking about a species that the majority of the time preys exclusively on the eggs of birds and reptiles, such as the scarlet snake.

Or are you talking about a species that can and will take bird egg and reptile eggs on occasion, such as ringneck snakes.

Are you also curious about the North American egg eater specialists, or snakes from other countries?

I mean African egg-eating snakes- the snakes that feed exclusively on bird eggs. The true rear-fanged egg-eaters of African and Asian countries. Also, what do you know about wolf snake care?
I am also looking for "Giant Chinese green snakes," but most of all, what I'm really after...

Brahminy blind snakes!

I've kept wolf snakes. And I have cared for egging eating snakes, years ago while working at petstore. Wolf snakes are very shy and difficult to aclimate. Once they are aclimated they are great pets, eat well and will live a long time. Few however, make it past the first six months, Asian snake syndrom. the egg eating snakes are easier when they are larger, find a good source for quail eggs or remove the water bowl for a couple of days and feed opened chicken eggs.

It's a relief to know that someone keeps these. I was wondering, about how large do the wolf snakes grow? These are labeled as "red-banded wolf snakes." I don't want something that gets huge; I like the smaller species. What do they eat?

And how about the egg eaters? Rhombics or Africans? Average size?

If these turn out to be too long, I will just pick up some Sonora while I'm in Rhode Island.

If you are interested in African egg eating snakes, Dasypeltis, then there is a yahoo group "Egg-Eaters" that's all about Dasypeltis. Mine is Dasypeltis inornata, and is about 4ft long. That is prety standard for adults. D. scabra is the most commonly seen, as is D. inornata and D. medici. Mine takes store bought chicken eggs (medium size - "grada A large" or "jumbo" are too big). Often though they won't take store bought eggs, unless perhaps you can find a gourmet or Asian food store that stocks quail eggs. Most others report needing eggs that smell like a "birds butt" ie. unwashed - and offer fresh quail, pigeon, or finch eggs.
