North Carolina Sandhills Yellow/greenish rat

guttersnacks Mar 08, 2005 10:40 PM

I went down to NC last fall with 2 buddies Chris and Brad. We went to the Sandhills and had some pretty neat finds. One of the more memorable moments was when Brad found this huge greenish rat. This guy had enough yellow in his lineage to almost be able to argue away the green in him.
We let him go, although his home was in a barn that was right off the road of some new construction. I hate to think it, but I wouldnt be surprised if it was dead by now.

Here he is, on the newly made road that blasted thru his hunting grounds. You can see how big the vehicles are judging by the size of the snake and the tracks in the dirt.

I should have kept him....

Very nice find! I certainly would have kept him if I were you. Oh well, hope he's still doing good somewhere in the sandhills of NC.

Definitely a nice find!! I love the natural colored snakes better than anything!! And this one was a treat to see!! Thanks for posting and yep, I dont know about keeping him, maybe relocating him to a more remote habitat.

great pictures regardless!!!

That's one nice greenish rat!!

That's a pretty typical greenish from what I find here in the coastal regions. A few range darker, and I've got a REALLY light male that I bred last year...better yet, he was caught not 100 ft. from my back door! I also caught on that looked nearly identical to the one you have pictured, a bit bigger maybe, about 15' up in a tree directly in my back yard.
