how are you getting baytril without a prescription??

BrentB Mar 08, 2005 11:54 PM

Dont know yet, im workin on that tomorrow, worse comes to worse ill take him to the vet so they prescribe it.

Unless you know somone special your gonna have to take it to the vet...they only sell that with a prescription

It's not the length that matters, it's the weight. Find an exact weight on your little guy and that will help, I could send you a chart that someone posted on here about baytril.

A vet is not a quikie-mart; there is a reason that drugs are prescription. If you came into my clinic and demanded Baytril I'd laugh in your face. Don't be cheap and do things right; take your snake to the vet, get it examined, and follow whatever professional advice the veterinarian has for you. The only advice I have for you other then that is to perhaps look for a vet that regularly sees snakes.

PS, if cost is an issue why did you get an African Rock of all species?

BrentB Mar 09, 2005 11:29 PM

Cost is not an issue. Whenever one of my snakes needed medical help, i always take them to the vet and get whatever i need to get. My vet is Roger Klingenberg, so i feel i can always trust him.
Id just like to do it myself if i can, any other time i took the snake to the vet and figured out what was wrong and already knew what needed to be done.

That'd be great.thanks

You have one of the best in Dr.Klingenberg. Consider yourself lucky to have a DVM like him available to you.

As a vet tech I am very experienced in examining, testing, and treating animals. It is very, very tempting to cut corners and try to diagnose and decide a treatment plan myself. You seem like you are very knowledgeable on such topics, but you and I both are not veterinarians. It takes the knowledge and experience that a vet obtains while become a DVM (and concurrent continueing education while specializing in herps) to fully consider what is wrong and what to do about it.

My suggestion to you if you would like to be more proactive in your animal's medical care is to develope your vet/client relationship with Dr. Klingenberg. Take your snake to see him. Regularly, even for yearly exams. Bring fecal samples. Discuss your motivation with the doctor and as he becomes more comfortable with your level of knowledge and experience he may help you with your goals. Now I'm not suggesting that it will ever come to the point where he will give you a bottle of Baytril without an exam, but this is not unheard of. This is often what rescue societies and wildlife rehabbers do.

The key is to never lose the value of a veterinarian.

Thanks, I am very lucky to have him around. At this point im not going to treat him or take him in. I upped his heat, he doesnt have any saliva build up, he looks great, eats, the whole 100 yards.
