made my uro a cage!

ohstiger424 Jul 08, 2003 04:18 PM

hey guys, i had my uro in a ten gallon tank since i got him last week, but i knew before i got him that it was too small so i already had a cage planned for him, well i started on it yesterday(monday) and finished it today (tuesday) it has three daytime lights (main heat light, uvb, and a light just to light the other end of the cage) which are all on timers that come on at 9:30am and go off at 6:30pm. then one black reptile bulb thats supposed to simulate the moon that is on a timer that goes on at 6:30pm and off at 9:30am. well here is a pic of the cage and my uro, btw: the cage is 5ft long 16inches deep and 14 inches tall.

Your cage is very nice. I'm sure your uro will be very happy with how long it is and the nice light setups you have. Great job!

I was wondering what materials you used, dimensions, the approximate cost. I currently house my uro in a glass tank, which he does really well in, but i hate that i have to take the top off to feed him and handle him. He hates the noise the top cover makes and I look like a predator trying to swoop down on him! It kinda freaks him out depending on what mood he's in.
Any advice on how to go about constructing my own would be greatly appreciated!!! Yours looks great!

Thanks,

tara

You have to take the entire top off? There are some wire tops that have little doors built into them (sort of like a hamster cage). I've got a large tank and the wire top has 2 doors built into it for easy access to both ends of the tank. It may be cheaper to consider changing tops rather than buying a whole new setup.

YES! The entire top doesn't just have to come off, it has to slide in and out on tracks! My mali, kameko, hates it!!! I have looked all over for a new top to fit the tank but from what i have heard they don't make them for bigger terrariums...Mine's 36 long by 24 wide. For now, i'm in the process of making one. When he gets older, I'm going to get a bigger home and definately will know what to look for.

Next time I'm in a pet store, I'll keep my eyes peeled for a top that will fit your tank. Then, I could give you their website address if you decide you want to buy one via internet.
Here's a pic of my tank with the wire top (just to give you an idea of the design).

hi, i dont know the cost of the materials cuz we're building a new house and i just used scraps from over there, but i ripped 2x4's in half to use for support, then i just made two rectangles w/ them for the front and the back, then covered everything except the front w/ ply wood. then i just made the door w/ another frame like the ones before except made to fit inside the front rectangle and i covered it w/ hardware cloth. i could probly draw up some rough plans, but i dont have any right now because whenever i make something i make it as i go. if you have more specific questions i'd be happy to answer. thanx
