Incubator question......please help...thanks

HTDesigns Mar 09, 2005 09:27 AM

I had a hovabator with the turbo fan. I took the top and used silicone to fix it to a large styro cooler aprox. 32 inches square and 32 inches high. the temps I am getting are around 87.4 to 89.9 degrees it bounces around there.

Know what type of box should I put the eggs in?

thanks Paul

hi Paul,

Put the biggest egg box that you can fit in there and fill it with as much vermiculite, perlite, or both that the box will hold while still having room for the eggs. The egg box should be sealed so the moisture level doesn't fluctuate too much. You will allow for enough gas exchange when you check on the eggs every couple of days. Also, make sure the medium is only slightly damp, so that it just barely clumps together when squeezed, too much water will cause the eggs to balloon up and die. They should not appear really taut or swollen with water.

PS - I really don't have any rats to spare, in fact, I'm looking to expand my own colony.

Using the same medium as described below, I use a small rubbermaid container with one hole in the lid to ensure that the stagnant air is moving out and good air is entering the container. The is will help maintain a solid temp inside the incubaitor itself and inside your holding container. Please feel free to call with any questions 469-363-0635.

Thanks,
Wyatt
