For someone wishing to get into mildly venemous animals....

Lucien Mar 09, 2005 09:33 AM

Alright, I have a few issues that need to be gotten past for this one.. Namely one where I live. I live in the Northeast Kingdom in VT, now currently they ban all exotics.. but the law is from the 50's and hasn't been updated. However, I am in contact with a friend who deals regularly with the legislation here so I know things will be changing soon. There's a permit system going into effect when the new bill is passed with some experience requirements. Only problem is, very few people deal with venemous animals here in VT. At least I don't know any anyway. I'm not looking to get into anything major though. No elapids....I'm looking more into possibly an eyelash viper and mangroves...other species of rear fanged snakes etc. At the present I have little experience with hots and this will be an ongoing project for me over the next few years culminating when I can finally purchase the animal. I do have experience with large constrictors, monitors and some of the more volatile non-venemous snakes in North America. What I'm wondering is if anyone knows of any handlers up this way...in VT or NH? I'm looking to be able to observe and learn from someone who really knows what they're doing. I'm not considering breeding these animals if/when I ever get them. Just keeping them for my own enjoyment and experience.

Try to find a zoo or similiar facility and ask if you can volunteer to work with their reptile keeper. Unless the keeper or facility you learn with/at is acredited or has SUBSTANTIAL documentable experience you will be waiting a long time to get permitted unless they are less restrictive than other states in their requirements. Glad to hear that VT is going the other way instead of banning which seems to be the MO these days.
Good luck!
