A Ball Python Market Trend I'm Seeing...........

jim_perron Mar 09, 2005 01:03 PM

A lot of guys are brokering ball pythons for other people....or claiming to be. Their essentially Middle-men getting a piece of the action. I realize this has always been the case with imported balls, but now I'm seeing it much more with the high end morphs....and het for visual morphs.

It's the fast way to make a ball python buck, but I have ran into some shifty dudes who are not willing to give good explaination on the animals they are selling. I caution all buyers of this type of scenario. I do realize there may be some stand-up guys doing this, however, there are some criminals following this trend as well.

Buy low....sell high. Many (not all) of these types of people won't back those animals up should something go wrong. Many of them have scetchy info on the history of the animal they are moving. If you are buying hets from these brokers....buyer beware!

I like the idea of buying from people that have personally produced what they are selling....Can accurately represent it.....demonstrate a history....and back it up should you have problems. I like buying from breeders. Sure....we have all sold a little something for a close friend....but brokering is a another level.

These are just my opinion....I realize we live in a free market system.....and people can use different creative means to produce income.....so please don't give me the open market speech. I just sharing a scenario I personally stear away from because it increases the odds I will get screwed.

Jim, this has been going on for a long time. Although, I think we are getting more "worms" than true brokers. I used to sell my animals through brokers because I did not want to deal with some of the nuts out there. Now, I just accept them for what they are and sell direct.

I agree, buying from the breeder is best. If a reseller cannot provide some sort of credible trail, keep on walking. I have passed on several animals that "Are (some fancy line) bought from a friend of a friend who got them in a trade from a guy who bred them...". Buying direct makes it (or at least should) simpler to verify. Even if someone who buys from me sells the animal, it comes with paperwork. And if I produced it, it comes with a picture. So is someone says they bought a snake from "John Doe" and it's supposed to be one of mine, I can confirm it.

You best point though is "demonstrate a history". I won't buy from someone who just popped up - now here's were this market is getting crazy. Well, maybe in person and what I see is what I get.
