Can anybody tell me about incubating in an aquarium?

DenverTom Mar 09, 2005 04:11 PM

I have seen on a DIY site making an incubator where the egg boxes are set in an aquarium partially filled with water, there's a fish tank water heater used to maintain temps, the egg boxes are set up on stilts so that they don't touch the water.
Can this sort of thing work for balls? Pro's and cons? Please feel free to add anything regarding this method.

Thanks
Denver Tom

Yes it will work fine. I use a set-up that is taken from that idea when my incubator is full and I get a suprise clutch or 2. It has worked great for me!

I've used this successfully with colubrid eggs dozens of times, however I've had trouble maintaining the higher temps needed for ball pythons. Just finding a fish tank heater that goes up to 90 is hard enough. You need to insulate VERY since well glass doesn't hold in heat very well, otherwise if the room temp drops too drastically the water temps can drop quite low before the heater can compensate. You also don't need stilts, just float the shoe box on the water.

I did it once with corn eggs but also not with python eggs.

I used a brick to be sure the box didn't sink.

Make sure fly's can't get in and lay on the eggs.

Maybe just try maternal incubation?

i use an aquarium as described. i wrap it in styrofoam to insulate it. styrofoam top. use a good submersible aquarium heater(Trionic brand)plenty accurate for bp eggs. set the box on a rack to keep it out of the water.vermiculite. i have had 100% hatch rate with it. i'll use it again this year. good luck.
