Question about UTH pad

vtec Mar 09, 2005 07:35 PM

I just bought a zoo-med heat pad for my 20 gallon-long tank because my heat bulb just blew and I am tired of having a red light always in my room. I think I read somewhere that it isn't good to put the heat on the side of their favorite hide for whatever reason. I once had a heatpad under his tank (the pad is now on my baby albinos tank) and the substrate under his favorite hide never got hot, just felt a little warm. Is there any adverse effects to heating their favorite hideside besides the possibility of burning their bellies?

Just a side note, the tank is elevated about an inch off of the surface (I have it sitting on pieces of wood on each end) so it has plenty of breathing room.

you're going to want to pick one side and designate it as the humid hide, with some form of humidity within the hide itself. This should be the side where your UTH is. I didn't have this problem because I introduced my little guy to a tank with all this stuff already set up. My gecko prefers his humid hide, so put the UTH under the side that he likes so he is warm enough to eat and digest his food. anyone have conflicting ideas?

You should have the minimum of two hides--one to go on the warm end, one to go on the cool end. It's even better if you can put a third hide to go in the middle.

The 10-20 gallon size Zoomed UTH gets REALLY hot, so make sure you've got it plugged into a dimmer or thermostat especially if you're using a thin layer of substrate.

Yeah he has 3 hides but he typically is always in his one hide (cold side) and he only goes to the other side to warm up then come back again (when I had a heat lamp on that side). I figured I would just switch heat sides so he can be in his favorite hide and be warm at the same time. How exactly do the thermostats work? I was thinking of getting one. Do you have a link? Thanks
