staring contest

polosue25 Mar 09, 2005 08:20 PM

it would appear brit is quite interested in my cat...or at least thinks she needs keeping an eye on--they've been staring at each other for about half an hour...will post a pic when they get uploaded. This is the most interested I have seen brit since she got here. she still hasn't eaten more than a few licks of babyfood but the weight is holding, so I hope she will start eating soon.

You may want to cover the tank so that the uro can't see the cat.

I don't have any experience with uros, but once I had one of my chuckwallas out with me to get some sun. All of the sudden she became almost catatonic. She refused to move. I put her down and she just laid there. Even when I nudged her she wouldn't move a muscle. After several minutes of trying to get some kind of response, I looked up. About 75 yards away, there was a red-tailed hawk perched on the telephone pole. As soon as I put myself between my chuck and the hawk (blocking my chuckwalla's view of the hawk) she perked right up and started acting normally. I figured she knew best, however, and took her back inside. What really impressed me was the fact that the hawk was so far away, yet still illicited such a strong response.

If your uro sees your cat as a predator, she may be really stressed by the cat's presence. Maybe if you put something up to block her view of the cat, she'd feel calmer and be more willing to eat.

at least your chuck was afraid of a hawk. helga gets the defensive look in her eyes when she hears a typical small bird chirp on my patio, hugo however is never bothered by them

it's the first time she's seen the cat really....cat was on vacation for the first week and then brit has refused to come out....so defensive or not (I have no pretensions of making them become 'friends'), at least she was up and being active. She has hides where she can't see the cat, and like I said, erra sort of looked at her but wasn't overly interested and left after a bit

that is a cute uro and a cute cat. some people have gotten their scaley and furry animals to become "friends" but i don't own any furry animals so i have no experience in that. do be cautious about the cat "harassing" the lizard, since the uro is new she has alot to worry about

You should get rid of the walnut shells. They are very good at causing blockages.

polosue25 Mar 10, 2005 06:57 PM

if you look, you will see that the substrate is birdseed (no sunflower husks), not walnut

I did look.It looks like there are two layers whats the bottom one?

polosue25 Mar 12, 2005 01:44 PM

the birdseed went on top of the walnut shells that were already in there, because 2 bags of seed didn't go as far as I thought they would, and also this elevates everything for higher basking temps. she's figured out that the birdseed is edible, as I occasionally hear crunching...

As she digs the two will get mixed together. If shes eating the birdseed theres a chance she'll eat the shells along with it.Not to mention getting it mixed with her food.If it was me(and at one time it was) I would get ride of the walnut shells.Could use bigger bulbs to get your temps?

polosue25 Mar 12, 2005 03:26 PM

at some point I'll change it to just birdseed, but not at the moment. there's a pretty good layer on top of the shells, and the temps are fine.
