Males and females

Melle Mar 10, 2005 12:31 AM

I have a male and a female crested. Both mature, both in seperate cages. I want to eventually breed them. But, would I be able to keep them housed together year round? Or will there be too much stress from overbreeding for the female? It would be so much easier for me to just keep em together all the time, but I also wanna do whats best for them both. so any opinions?

I would say do not keep them together year round. I know with the males I have the want to breed all the time. Which will really stress your females out and could even kill them if your male is to rough. I keep my males in for about 3 months at a time, then I give my females a break and the males so they can pack the weight back on and the females can get ready to lay without being bothered by the males wanting to breed. But this is just my opinion, everyone has different ideas!

I agree, I also put my males in with females for a few months, and then separate them. I alternate, letting some females with males in winter and rest in summer, and other females with males in summer and rest in winter, so I get some eggs/babies for the local shows year 'round without burning anyone out.
