Mosca the Paper Eater

purduecg Mar 10, 2005 08:50 AM

So, I think there was a thread on this a while back...

Mosca has started eating the paper towels I am using as substrate. I had been noticing what looked like bite marks, but assumed it was just shredded because that is where he "tunnels" under the paper toweling all the time. Then last night, I look over and he has a mouth full of paper towel!

I am wondering if he only does it when he doesn't think I am feeding him enough... but I already feed him what seems like an enormous amount every day! He is such a food hog, lol.

Any thoughts on this behaviour?

Elizabeth

ps - Yes Eve, I keep meaning to post new pics, he is getting so big!!

This is totally a guess, but maybe he's trying to get some food element that he's not getting enough of? The only reason I can think paper would be attractive would be for fiber - maybe try adding in a little alfalfa or timothy hay to his food? Or maybe it's just a weird boredom thing. My cat licks cloth incessantly - why shouldn't eating paper be fun, too?

That actually does seem like a boredom thing also. But maybe Mosca might be doing that to signal to you that he/she's ready to be moved on to a different substrate.

Our dog licks the couch, until we tell her no. Then she stops for 2 minutes just to start back up.
