Have you ever entered your Anole(s) in the Olympics? Feeding them moths

SharkKing Mar 10, 2005 09:01 AM

Ke aloha no, Folks!

Has anyone allowed waxworms to stay outside refrigeration
so they can become moths and then let the moths loose in your
Anole(s)' tank to watch them try to catch and eat them? Someone
suggested this to me on UseNet's Rec.Pets.Herp message forum
and it sounds like it might be a lot of fun for my Anole. I
know I would certainly enjoy watching him dive, jump and make
every effort to fly in his tank in order to catch and eat the
moths. Peace.

If you want to sustain a colony of waxworms, you have to let some of the larvae metamorphose into moths. Greater Wax Moths (Gallaria mellonella) are NOT particularly good fliers. They prefer to scurry about instead of flying. For a real display, catch some appropriately sized moths at the porchlight when the weather warms up.

Houseflies are a lot of fun, too. Sprocket did a wicked bungee jump this week. He was on the top ledge of the glass on the back of the aquarium (just under the lid). As the fly buzzed by, he launched the front half of his body out to catch the fly midair, swinging down to catch the wall again. Back legs kept hold of the rim of the tank the whole time. It was quite athletic!

Judging from your posts El Toro it sounds to me like your
Anoles are doing quite well. Was it Sprocket or Bowser who
you caught....with Leeloo? <g> Cause if that was Sprocket too,
well he's certainly one active little Green Anole you've got
there!
Are you concerned about potential offspring as far as
housing and caring for them all? That's the only reason I
don't get my single male Anole a female(s) tank mate. The
potential offspring I mean. Now that I've got him in a 20
gallon high (16" tank all by himself there's certainly room
for at least one female Anole in there too. Peace.

It was Sprocket. I knew Bowser was male, that's why he has his own tank. I *thought* Sprocket was female, which was the only reason he was in the same tank as Leeloo. I don't want offspring running around, so I'm separating them as soon as I possibly can (should be next week). The two tanks are within view of each other, so there's also been a lot of displaying and intimidation between Bowser and Sprocket in the last week.

Sprocket, eh? Busted! Did you manage to capture a "Kodak" moment for your scrapbook? Not for nothing, but I've read that female Anoles can retain "the ability" to continue to lay viable eggs for up to *I think* four months after the actual mating itself. You just might get your wish to have Anoles all around where you live! Peace.

From a single successful mating, a female Anole can lay up to about 10 eggs. That is one (or rarely two) at a time at roughly two week intervals. That is about twenty weeks or about 5 months.

Hiya, Atrax!

I'll betcha El_Toro is gonna be mighty happy to read that post!
If I was Sprocket I'd keep a low profile for a while. Peace.

Almost everytime my female lays eggs she lays pairs. It's been 17 days and she has already laid 7 eggs. She does eat a lot even when she's gravid.
