substrate question

dirtychris Mar 10, 2005 03:18 PM

Hey I'm using a coconut fiber bedding (eco-earth) which says that it's harmless if ingested and won't cause impactions. My borneo won't eat if you take him out of the enclosure and put him in a separate tub. Anyone have any problems with this type of subtrate or suggestions for feeding without him ingesting any? Thanks. -chris-

I personally think the coconut fiber is dusty and it feels like you're keeping your snake on dirt. It gets on everything and its just a general pain. If you like it, I don't see any problems with it, but I like larger substrates like aspen or cypress mulch better.

the "sandy" type substrates are generally made for diff reptiles than snakes (turtles, iguanas, lizards, etc). it wont harm your snake but it is best to find a substrate that matches your snake's own natural (wild) environment.

Hey,
Well, there is always going to be a problem with using anything, other than newspaper, as anything but, can also stick to the food item, particularly when wet from either the bloods saliva or water from soaking to thaw for feeding. So my choice is always going to be bar none, newspaper. However, below is a solution if you choose to use other substrates. Place some clean newspaper under the snake while feeding. When they strike and are constricting I find it easy to lift the snake up with the food still in its mouth, and place some newspaper underneath it; simple.
