glass tracks..plastic -vs- metal?

babystolemydingo Mar 10, 2005 03:38 PM

Ok now ive seen the tracks others have used for their cages, the plastic kind ya glue in.

But as I called around for glass quotes and asked about the tracks, they all suggested using metal tracks and wheels.

Obviously its more expensive than the plastic ones, but does that mean it will work better?

I intend on using sand in my beardies enclosure, which of the tracks will be less bothersome?

Or should order the plastic kind online? Is there any other place that might have them cheaper then rockler.com?

I've never used the metal tracks with rollers in a sand-filled cage so I'm not sure it would work better.

If you could find a product where the upper track has the wheels and the lower track just acted as a guide for a floating door that would likely work great with sand. Similar to many closet doors.

Don't know if such a product exists.

Outwater Plastics. I believe it's product number 180? You have to order something like 12'.

I actually discovered the other day that home depot carries both the metal track with wheels, and the plastic track. It's actually cheaper than rockler... before shipping even. And it's in a 6 foot section. Ticked me off when I found out, lol.

One thing to make sure of when using metal roller track with beardies or any lizards / large snakes. The "standard roller track" looks like this as the kit form
This type track can be pushed off the rail due to the only thing holding onto the rail is gravitiy.

This track pictured here has a anti lift feature that means the doors go on at a angle and have a locking device to keep the door from being pushed/lifted out. This track is a nice thing rolls super smooth and can open even large glass doors with one finger . As long as you place it on a litter dam the sand wont effect the track or rollers . I have used this with 60lb glass doors that have been used for a huge custom wood argus monitor cage that houses two large ones with sand and the same tracks been in place for almost 3 years . The rollers have been replaced due to the wear n tear ( its in a public store so the upkeep is such its opened often as they let customers feed then for $2 a mouse so they stay in and out all the time lol . the metal track is more upfront but the durability of it and look is worth it in my opinion.
