Torn Skin

ALM Jul 08, 2003 05:53 PM

I picked up my BP today and noticed his skin is sort of dry looking (like there's a whitish dust on him.). He's had mites for a while that I'm trying to get rid of, and when I was handling him and rubbed his skin to pick off a couple mites, it ripped, exposing the white flesh underneath. Is this because he's dry? More importantly, is this minor or should I rush him to a vet?
Thank you!

Rush him to the Vet if the white flesh underneath is exposed.

...the white dust is probably mite excrement (sh-t in lay terms). Your snake is severely dehydrated. Do not delay offering unflavored Pedialyte (avail in pharmacies). I recommend soaking this snake in lukewarm Pedialyte ASAP. Clorox his cage and discard or disinfect ALL cage furniture. The torn skin should be treated with Polysporin or Neosporin ointment or Betadine (or generic povidone iodine) ointment. Mite treatment: there are many agents available...all work...whatever your local vet has will work. Scott J. Michaels DVM
