Basking area temp?

nez02 Mar 10, 2005 09:59 PM

My basking area temp is about 95-100. Is this to high? What is the ideal temp I am looking for my veiled. I know he needs slightly lower temps than an adult. I have noticed he hardly is under his basking light and when he is it is for short periods (maybe 5 min). Then hes back uder his 5.0 bulb as close as he can get to it. This is leading me to beleive it may be to warm for him. Hes very active all over his cage during the day and eating and driking nicely.

Thanks for the help everyone I would be lost without it.

That does sound a little too warm. I would think temp in the cage should be between 75-88 (90max). My veiled loves basking under his uvb light as well. The uvb is supposed stimulate activity, he shouldn't have to bask all day, and also provide a shady area for him to rest under and cool down.

Try moving the basking light a bit farther from the cage. Young chams heat up and cool off faster than adults as they have relatively more surface area. Its usually a bit safer to be slightly on the cool side. He will simply bask for a longer time.
