Keeping Crix outdoors in AZ

sunbirdx Mar 11, 2005 09:50 AM

Hey all,
I am over from the Bearded Dragon Forum. I live in Arizona, and wanted to buy 1000 crix for my BD....problem is, I want to keep them outside in the shade, where it sometimes reaches 100 degrees. Has anyone tried this, and are there any arizona people here who can tell me about their experiences?
Additionally, if you keep them in a rubbermaid container, do you keep the lid on or off?
Thanks!

Hi,
I am familiar with steamy Arizona temps...
Sure, you can keep the crix in a rubbermaid with egg crates and screened lid - as long as direct sun does not hit the tub and create an oven. If you have a place on a porch or concrete slab that does not get sunshine on it, sitting the tub there can help keep the temps from getting to 100. Wetting the concrete helps too.

Get a large rubbermaid or sterilite container if you are going to keep 1000 med-lg crix - like 128 qt or so - not the 68qt. The smaller one will result in crix deaths - overcrowding. In high heat, crix sweat... and they can drown in that moisture. You should consider cutting vent holes high in the sides of the tub and in the lid... and cover them with aluminum screen. Oh, and keep the lid on as they can hop out.

Keeping them in a garage would be be too stuffy unless it had good ventilation. Hope this helps.
