Question? Anyone else have hets that are obvious gene carriers?Pics

TonyB Mar 11, 2005 03:13 PM

I was wondering how many other people have or have seen something similar to my snake. He is (DH sunglow) hypo het albino and has a-lot of albino scales. I have seen this with paradox albinos and paradox snows (visible morphs), but never with an animal that is het for a gene.
I almost forgot. I did not produce this snake, he was produced by Jeremy Stone. Thanks Jeremy.

He didnt have nearly as much white scales as that but there were some. Looked just like that too.

Hey Tony are you sure that is a marker for the het albino trait or are you just asking? Thanks Andy

TonyB Mar 11, 2005 08:55 PM

I'm not saying that it's a marker trait. He is 100% het albino, proven breeder. I want to know if anyone else has or has seen something similar to him. It's just weird for a het albino to have albino scales. Thanks.

I have a gravid female 100% het from J.Ronne who has these same white scales. I never have given this any thought. However, I have Hets without this.
I wish that I knew the true way to tell hets from a batch of possible hets.

Hey Tony, I like the fact that you brought up a question on your mind...I wish more people would. I agree that there is a marker trait, just would like to know what it is. There is talk that jeff Ronne knows the marker trait for het albino's, but he will not budge. I am also thinking you may be onto something too. I have 2 Salmons both are brothers and 66% het albino. One has started getting red/yellow scale speckles toward the rear of the body. The other stayed the same normal look. I have been thinking the speckled one will prove out a double het. I have also noticed the darker toned pigment in hypos het for anery, I have a possible female tripple het, shows the anery trait compared to normal Salmons, but as yet I do not see any sign of the albino gene being expressed. To some this may sound schetchy, but if you have Salmons of all types you begin to notice the difference. Andy

I have a female het albino that I produced(so I know she's 100% het...not yet "proven" through breeding though) that is doing this, but out of the 6 females I held back, she's the only one that's doing it. So, I wouldn't call it a definite "marker" or I'd think they'd all have it. I'm still under the assumption that the only way to know a boa is het albino(if produced by someone else) is by breeding it and waiting for the outcome. Honestly, out of the 6, no two even look like siblings, so if there is a "marker" it's something they all have similar that I haven't noticed yet. Well, just giving my opinion, hope it helped. Take care!

Paul

Paul..would you be willing to take a pic of all those 6 hets in the same container? Maybe we can figure out between us all, what markers there are. Thanks Andy

Well, I have no problem shooting some pics for you, but I don't know if I can get a large group all at once....they're at 2 years old, so getting pretty big at this point. I will do my best to get you some good shots you can compare with...like atleast 2 together at a time. E-mail me if you don't mind if you don't see the pics within the next couple days. The attached pic is 2 of the siblings. The laddertail is the one that is starting to develop the scale blotches like what was pictured in the original post....I don't see it started yet in this pic though, so it's definitely developed over time.

Yes, I have a DH Sunglow male who is showing that trait EXACTLY, it has appearted as he matures. Do you know which of Jeremy's Boas is the sire?
Mine was sired by a sunglow named "Sunkist"
I will try to get a pic of the scales with missing pigment.
