How big is too big?

mikesanders Mar 11, 2005 05:40 PM

I have two BP's... And both are growing to good size... I've had them both for about 6 months... I was just wondering how big is too big when it comes to feeding them rats.... Both of my boys are under a year old... and the smaller one suprised me when it took on a small rat... should I give the bigger one a medium sized rat? Or would that be overkill?

As long as the rat is no larger around than the widest part of the snake...then you should be fine.

All depends on the size of rat and size of snake. Personally when my snakes are over 500g on an empty stomach they start eating 200g rats, I have had no problems until that I give them weaned rats till they are about 250g and then to small rats once they are over 250g. A proper sized meal will leave them with a nice bulge in their belly for 2 - 3 days. If you feed your snake and a couple hours later you can't tell they have eaten go ahead and offer something larger next time or give 2 of the size you have been giving.
