Feeding a burm by weight?

Ses01 Mar 11, 2005 08:57 PM

Hello all. I was wondering out of curiousity. People have told me that a ball python should be fed 25% of its own body weight at each feeding (once a week). Is there a formula like this for burms also? Feed it a percent of its weight? Or just pick one rodent or rabbit that is approx. the same size as the largest part of the body? Again, I was just curious. I do not have a burm yet, and am waiting to get one until I can care for it properly. I just thought this was an interesting question.

No!! A snake should never be fed 25% of their body weight once a week. That is way too much, you would end up with an extremely obese snake with in a few months. For burms, I (as well as others that I know) would recommend 10% of the snakes body weight per feeding, every 5-7 days for the first year. Then every 7-10 days after one year of age. Once your burm is sexually mature and pretty much done growing, they can be put on 10-15% of their body weight once a month, or about 5% every 2 weeks.

I thought 25% was too much also. I DO NOT feed my ball pythons that by any means. The smaller girl only gets one adult mouse a week and the adult male gets one medium rat a week. As I said, that is what I was told they should be fed, but I could never bring myself to feed that much. Thanks for the insight into the Burms. I just ifnd it interesting to know.
