giant tangarine hondo

phiber_optikx Mar 12, 2005 04:00 AM

hello everyone, I am brand new to this forum. I am concidering buying a tangerine honduran. I really know nothing about them aside from the fact that they are beautifull snakes. I am curious to know how big they get. Also what is their disposition? Are they difficult snakes to care for? What type of housing/care do they need? Also I have heard rumor of a "Giant Tangarine" how big do these get? I have a ball python now and would prefer to have a bigger snake than a smaller one. Are the giant tangerines any different than the regular ones aside from the fact they are bigger? Thanks again for all of your time!

"giant tangerine" sounds like the kinds of marketing terms often created by our friends in the ball python fancy. there may be something out there that routinely throws babies that become "giants" and that are tangerines, but i've never heard of it. are you sure that's not just a term one person's used? tell us more about the nature of the rumor--did you hear it from someone with some to sell? have you heard it from numerous people? etc. always fun to try to track down the stories, see whether they're real or urban legends.

No, I just saw it about a 2 months ago in the milksnake photo gallery.

the pic shown of the almost eight-footer is a photo from 30 years ago. Louis Porras and others in south florida imported thousands of hondurans. One was apparently eight feet long. If you graphed the lengths of those thousands of adults you'd get a typical "bell curve" with the greatest number of adults (I'm guessing here) in the 4.5 to 5.0 foot range; certainly the greatest number of them would cluster in the 4-6 foot range. Then there's be a few at 6.6 feet, maybe one at 7 feet, and that singular, unique animal at 8 feet, if that's what it is. At the other extreme, there'd be some "adults" at 3.5 or 4.0 feet. That's especially true, i think, if you defined adult as capable of reproduction, there are always occasional, very small animals that breed successfully.

So while an 8' hondo is fun to think about and even more impressive to see documented, it's just a notation of an exceptional animal. If anyone thinks they have a secret unique line of tangerine "giants" descended from that animal 30 years ago but kept concealed until now, I'd like to hear from them. I'd be willing to trade some land here in florida for a couple specimens...or that bridge in new york I have the deed to.

peace!

The owner of the website e-mailed me and said that they were 100 dollars and she CAN guarantee that they will be giant." Although it is just her word against most everyones, isn't it possible that They could be breeding specifically larger snakes, not giant 8 footers but just breeding for size. like 6-6.5 etc.?

I just spoke to the owner of the website and HE said he wouldn't and couldn't guarantee they would be giant. Don
I can't guarantee they will be huge.My adults are big but that doesn't
> guarantee they will be huge.
> The average over five foot and are very nice as they age but are a bit
> spastic as babies.

I just got an e-mail from him today. In the e-mail he sent me which said they were guaranteed was a misprint.

"if anyone has any pictures of gigantic - monsterous - collosal honduran milksnakes being held by an average sized human male, with blonde hair. I'd like to see one 4 feet 11.38 inches, one 5 feet 2.34567 inches, and another 16 feet long. I'd like the left eye to be visible in all photos, and the animals in particular should be held by the tail while facing north by north-east".

That's funny because I was thinking of Dan6971 myself.

It's got that "here we go again" vibe to it, I'll admit.

The difference is I'm not asking the same stupid questions over and over. All I said is I recieved an e-mail from a breeder saying they had "giant" hondos and wanted to know if it was true. And I didn't ask for any pictures.

nothing wrong with your question, you don't learn without asking. we're mostly poking fun at each other. laugh along...and consider making an offer on that bridge i mentioned.

you've got to be kidding to think anyone would have a pic of snakes meeting all three of those specs.

I have one that came close, but the mid-sized snake is 5 ft 2.34566 inches, not 5 ft 2.34567 inches. Maybe i can take another pic in 3.08 minutes and it'll be up to spec. I'm a little reluctant to go back into the snake room, though, with that 16-footer in there.

sorry for the disappointment.

Gosh Terry,

I thought of out of everyone on the boards at least you, the "Lord of the Hondurans" would be able to come up with some pictures of the "Elephant-itis" Honduran milksnakes, lol.

It's all good
