Good alternative to silversides

athos_76 Mar 12, 2005 11:11 AM

Hey all,
I've been feeding both of my monsters silversides for the past year, but now as they grow in size, they dont even notice when I drop the silvers in, so I have to hold them in hand and get them to eat them. And as you all know, that can get a little dangerous... and I'm not gonna be called stumpy for the rest of my life. Are there any other feeder fish alternatives I should look into? I don't trust shiners from the bait shop, cuz I don't know the way they were raised, and my local bait shop has them in the blue toilet water stuff...
What should I feed them?
Also, has anyone used the recipe from
users.adelphia.net/~ericcampbell/stl/ ?

I would watch the seafood departments at your local grocery stores. A lot of them will try and move "old" fish by reducing the price. I used to work in a meat market, and I was in charge of the fish counter. We'd knock stuff down to a buck a pound to get rid of it. Try talking with the guy in charge; you might be able to work out a deal. My guess would be if it's safe for human consumption, it isn't going to hurt your turtle. Catfish and rainbow trout are both common freshwater fish. Another option is to buy the necessary fishing license and hoop trap and just trap your own fish. Of course, that won't work if your turtles are captive born, due to the introduced pathogen problem.

I was wondering that too.
I wish I could find someone that was getting rid of some large oscars or something.
