Found Gecko Dead in the tank, do not know why it died!

Luxuryreptiles Mar 12, 2005 01:41 PM

Hello, I found my female dead in her tank this morning, she was about a year old. Yesterday afternoon I found her on her back thought she was dead, but she wasn't moving that much. I had to run to work, came home put some more neosporin on the one cut, that was new. She was swinging her head in circles, this was about 1 am. She wasn't opening up her eyes, or anything. This morning at about 9 am I checked on her , and found her dead under her newspaper at the bottom of the tank. I have no clue what she died from or what, this has not been a long process she as healthy as could be Thursday.. ate about 10 mealies, and was lifless friday. Someone said it could have been brain damage from breeding, or internal ear damage. She also had a Dark Bluish/purplish dot in her stomach. Plz help if you know happened or have any occurances like this with your geckos.

Did the neosporine you used have painkiller in it? something like novacain? If so then that she could have died from a drug over dose, reptiles and amphibians are very sensitive to narcotics,in fact many frog keeps use orajel to painlessly euthinize sick frogs.

Actually the symptoms you described sound like she was bleeding internally for quite some time.

See if you are internally bleeding blood is not moving anywhere else but your stomach. Not enough blood is getting to your head and you get dizzy, pass out, feel like your about to vomit.

Now a human can ingest 1/2 a gallon of blood (hopefully their own blood) before they die. Now if you were a leopard gecko then you'd only need about 1/4 of an ounce of blood in your belly to die.

My brother used to work at Petsmart. Everytime they had a gecko that was sick it always had a blueish red spot on its underside, it had internal bleeding. Usually because of an impaction of some sort of a biral infection.

That's just my opinion on the subject, take it or leave it. I'm not an expert with leopards but I do know a good sized amount about internal bleeding in reptiles and humans alike.

Did the leo have the spot on it's abdomen before? Younger leos usually have a dark bluish/purplish spot on the abdomen; since their skin is still thin, their liver (I believe it's the liver) shows through.

But if it wasn't normal, my next idea would be internal bleeding, too. If you haven't already given the leo a funeral, you might take it to the vet - they can do an autopsy to find out what killed it. For a fee, of course.

I think the guy/gal who owns the dead female said she was about a year of age.
