garden: what to grow?

Rouen Mar 12, 2005 02:25 PM

this spring I'll be growing a garden and some of the produce is going to be box turtle food, any recomendations as to what I should grow, what I'm already going to grow: radishes, bell peppers, acorn squash, potatoes, broccoli, green beans, carrots, summer squash, tomatoes, any input would be appreciated.

Collards, romaine lettuce, strawberries, and canteloupe might be good additions to your list. Also, if you have room for them, check out blueberry bushes and/or thornless blackberries.

well I've already got 2 year old wild strawberry plants, red raspberries and grapes growing in the yard, I'm sure I can get some blue berries out there aswell I'll add the green you mentioned and maybe a couple different types of melon, thanks for the input Steph!

Definately Blackberries! Never tried blueberries, but mine LOVE blackberries and they have alot of good stuff in them.
I also give them a lot of tomatoes.

Never tried asparagus, but I did discover last summer, after having been into this "hobby" for three years, that they love dandilion greens.

We don't do the weed and feed thing so we have a good supply. I had heard that they were very nutritious, but they looks so scrawny compared to, say, romaine leaves.

But, I had some dandilions in a garden that were getting pretty big, so I dug them up and threw them in the pen and the turtles went wild!

If I have time, I will transplant them into the pen, so if the turtles aren't in the mood for them at the time, they will stay fresh, but they usually don't last more than a day, although sometimes new leaves will sprout from the root.

I also transplanted a prickly pear cactus that I found in the nearby woods, and it gradually disappeared. I don't know how they deal with the spines but they (spines) didn't seem to cause any problems for them.
