I was hoping to come across more Uros then I did there. All i saw were several ornates, a couple mali, and one tank full of geyri.

I JUST got back as well
I saw several ornates, hardickii, mali, some banded, several tanks of geyri.... however.... all the "ornates" were NOT ornates. At the first table in the door, four of them were macfadyeni (1.1 adults and juvies). I took the two females and left the two males (although the adult male had gorgeous markings I have no space and just got a juvie a week ago) and also picked up two geyri females.
At one of the geyri dealers I picked the one female they had in the tank up and it seizured in my hand. Back arched (backwards), mouth gaping open, rectal emission, it looked dying. "Have a nice day," I went back to Reptile Depot. Their Uros were actually the only ones under heat lamps in the entire place and looked healthy. Took a yellow and red home.
Just soaked everyone and am going to observe them while doing homework.

when i went last october, only two dealers had uros and i cannot for the life of me remember who i got hugo from but they had theirs under heat and they had good looking uros. they owe me some royalties because as i was standing their i helped them sell a couple since the woman saw that i knew what i was doing and asked my opinion, ha ha. it seems like there were more uros there this time from your descriptions. too bad there was a bad seller there too! i wonder if that uro is still alive?

I very much doubt it. The guy "did me a favor" and declined to let me purchase that one... not as if I would. Even if I were still feeling that ill animals were "fixable", that would not be a candidate. I've seen one dead Uro after days of hanging on and I've seen another die in front of me. If not final, that one was extremely close today. The eyes wide open and drawn back, back and tail contorted in an unnatural way with the mouth gaping wide as if to scream a slient lizard scream... it was very much a Lovecraftian expression of terminal agony. It probably should have been euthanized on the spot. I wouldn't have the slightest idea what proper protocol is, nor how to handle it in a public place. I should probably ask my vet...
It makes me want to reiterate to people to check their animals thoroughly during a purchase. Cold animals really need a more thorough check because they all act about the same when they're cold- sick or healthy. You can find information about selecting animals elsewhere on the net. I've got my critera and everyone is in quarantine for a couple weeks as I've been advised.
Even if you're a beginner with a modest amount of research under your belt, you're probably 10 times as knowledgable about these animals as their dealers. Query their upkeep, history, warranty, and record.
I got everyone settled in earlier and I noticed the littlest macfad girl jumping a good six inches into the container wall trying to get out (12" wall), much like I've seen my other three doing in a glass enclosure (I've seen no other Uros actually jump yet). They're persistant and I figured success was inevitable so I headed up to Home Depot to get a bigger bucket. Cruised by Costco, got home and started relocating everyone. One Uro. Two Uro. Three Uro. Didn't I have four Uros? Crap, she's good. Where to find a hiding Uro? No idea. I started a radial search of the area taking everything apart and relocating upturned items. She made it about 15 feet and settled in behind the Hi-fi system. I saw her on the third time I looked back there before I started into the "inconvenient" places.

Uromastyx geyri (Saharan/Niger/Nigerian in yellow/orange/red). That was a cute little one they had there. Belly color is a "good" indication of sex for geyri. Bright colors is mostly accepted as male while a white belly is normally female... I don't think that's 100% accurate after my recent experiences, though.
Treat it well and good luck!

I didn't think very big, but ~14" is what I saw at the show. Yikes. Varies per species, though.

They get to be quite a good size. My girl, Fanta is about 2 1/2 and weighs 318 grams. She has grown the fastest of all my uros and eats like there is no tomorrow. Enjoy yours!
Pam

hey I just got back from the same show and I won a uro but i dont know which particular kind it is, can you help me?
here is a picture.
Thanks so much!

no offense to you (and congrats on your new uro) but they are raffling animals off to people and not telling them anything about them? there is something wrong with that.
anyway, there is a really good site deerfernfarms.com that has alot of uromastyx information. also at the top of every kingsnake page are links to events yadda yadda and it has one of caresheets.

to do them justice, the guy at the booth told me basic care instructions and information, but when i looked up uro's online there are all kinds of types and i want to know which one mine is. I could have one that grows to 10 inches or to 3 feet.
the guy at the booth said mine would get to about 10-11 inches or so. do you guys agree?
what can you tell me.. and do my pics look like the u. geyri species?
thanks!

That actually looks like the Saharan Uro's I had.
They get 11-14 inches and only about 280 grams.
Now if you had an Egyptian Uro (U. aegypticus) then it'd be 2-3 feet in length. Note that the U. aegypticus is the biggest of the Egyptian species, there's a smaller type of Egyptian (U. a. microlepis) that doesn't get quit as long.
But it looks like you have a Saharan Uromastyx on your hands.

Red phase Saharan (Niger, Geyri). Most are wild caught and very difficult to acclimate, so keep a close eye on it. Get a fecal sample to the vet asap, too. About right for size - 11-14" depending on male or female and on the individual.
