Black rat snake shedding problems

tigress Jul 08, 2003 07:37 PM

Ok, I have a little baby black rat snake. Got him maybe 2 months ago. He has gonet hrough two sheds since I've gotten him, neither one was a good shed.

The first time from what I could tell (what little shed there was) he didn't manage to get more than the last half of his body. This time it seems his head and his tail parts were missing from the shed skin. So I put him in a damp pillowcase to maybe get him a little more humid. He's been there a day and so far there's been a decent amount from his tail that wants to come off, though I'm pretty sure it wasn't all of the part near the tail that needed to come off. The part that is coming off is still stuck at the tip of his tail. I tried to gently roll it off, it's stuck there pretty well (I don't want to really pull at it in fear of ripping his new skin, but I thought I'd try to gently roll it to see if maybe it would slide off, it doesn't).

He's a hard little guy to handle, he bites bites bites and squirms like crazy.

Any ideas on how to get his skin to actually come off? I don't want to force it off if I don't have to partly because I fear tearing new skin and partly because he's so squirmy and small I am not sure how to hold him still enough without crushing him (and his head part has to come off too. I still haven't seen any skin from the face anywhere).

Place a damp towel in his enclosure, and make sure there's a rough log or rock in there that he can rub against to get started. I find that after a day or so (usually less) in a high-hulidity environment, it'll come right off.

Sounds like you have one of the ornery ones! Be that as it may, you still may have to help him along if the old skin is broke and only partially still on.

Also make sure that temps are right... roughly 85/75. A cold snake may have difficulty shedding. And make sure there is something rough to rub on.
