the uvb will go right through the screen, just not a glass cover.
As long as the screen is not too fine the UVB can pass through, extremely fine mesh can block UVB though, and direct UVB is always more powerful.

AlteredMind is correct. Screen does filter out a little UVB, especially really fine screen. Maybe you could put hardware cloth on the strip where the UVB would be, it would let more UVB through if thats what you are worried about. Some people even mount them inside the cage.

thnx for the info guys. how would i use the hardware cloth dmlove? can u tell me a little more about it?
Well its actually metal, not cloth, about 1/4"-1/2" wide for each square. You could cut the screen out in one strip on the top where you wish to place the flourescent and replace it with the hardware cloth. Get it at most hardware stores.
