Thinking of Getting

connorrm Mar 12, 2005 09:49 PM

Hey all,
Thinking of getting a Dumerils. Have had ball pythons for the last three years with no problems but want something a little different and a little larger. How are they as pets. I am very intrigued by them. I have been reading up on them but am looking for more about their care but wanted to know if they are good for intermediate keepers... Thanks

From my experience they are no different than any other boa constrictor. I have had about 5 in the past and every one was great. They have a beautiful pattern, and dont get as big as some of the BCC locality boas. I would recomend them, I have always been fascinated by the fact that they come from Madagascar, and that Island only has 3 kinds of boas on it. I would recomend them for sure. There is not as many Color morphs, or pattern morphs as BCI, but They are beautiful. Good luck

Are there even any morphs out there? I am having a hard time finding a nice reputable breeder. Any suggestions would be great. Do they really only average five to seven feet?

Paul(pbm) and myself have Hypos Dumerils which can be seen at my site. I also have the Arancio that is in the pic. I would say they average 6-7ft. Stick with a breeder when buying these would be my suggestion 90% of the question I get in concern to problems with this species are from people who bought neonates through wholesalers. They dont do well in that enviroment. In the wild I doubt offspring every actually come to the top of the surface they stay under rocks leaves etc always confined. When these animals are suffled from place to place and kept multiples to a cage they stress and often wont feed. I never have problems getting mine to eat some may take a while but never the probs that others have. Keep them in a small confined cage till they are doing well and they do great. But read up on them they are nothing like colombians. June is coming on fast and babies should start popping then so Id just keep an eye out till then. Best of luck

i first learned about dumeril's after my roommate mentioned how beautiful they were. i bought one about 6 weeks later through a business in cali. he has been an awesome snake and have never had any problems with handling or feeding. he is a little rat disposal unit, and i have had to move his food size up twice now because he was eating waaaaay to many mice and ratpups. however, i have read some people say that dumeril's always hiss and strike at them. the only thing i can think of is that mine was already tamed (he came out of the shipping box just as happy and calm as can be) or these people are buying WC. if you are tired of or wanting to veer off the BP path, then i would recommend either Dumeril's or maybe even bloods.
