Hey Rosy Lovers, standby to be jealous!!!!

USNHM242 Mar 13, 2005 12:29 AM

Billboard and I herped today for the first time this season. We went to the secret spot affectionately named "Bruce Rock" in riverside county. We did some flipping and saw a total of 12, thats right 12 rosys.(5 in one crack) Making it my best rosy hunt ever. I herped for a little under 3 hours. I desided to keep a large pair, they quickly regurgitated baby rabbits. So now we know what they're munching on to get that big. Also 2 of the large males and one of the females were huge with stub tails.
After the successful hunt I hit a second spot on my way home for some flipping and found 4 snakes including a snake that is unknow to me. I left my camera in the car(should of know better), but hopefully one of you guys could help me identify it. I was the size of an adult ring neck. It was light brown with keeled scales. It had a triangular head and originally I thought it was a hatchling helleri until I saw the tail. It has two black spots on its neck. It got away into a crack before I could get it. Anyways here is the total for my herping today:
12 rosys(2 kept, 10 released).
1 coastal cal king
1 baby red diamond(crotalus ruber)
2 ringnecks
1 unknown snakes
20+ side blocked lizards
5+ Spiny lizards
1 skink
2 night lizards
Anyways enjoy the pics.

Doc,
Your description of the mystery snakes suggests it may have been a Night Snake.

I was thinking that two but the size and coastal location threw me off. I have been hunting that spot for a long time now, and have never seen one in the area. Maybe it was a nightsnake hatchling. Thanks for the help richard.

Is that how you found them, visibly theremoregulating and visible by the distant eye?
Awesome post.

USNHM242 Mar 13, 2005 12:16 PM

yeah all 11 out of 12 where thermoregulating in cracks partly exposed. The 1 that wasn't in a crack was out and about for a crawl shorly after munching down 2 baby rabbits(i know because she threw up after i caught her.)
