Really important breeding question...someone help!!!

msmoose Mar 13, 2005 09:19 AM

Any help for this is requested!!! What are the definite "NO" signs in a breeding scenario. I have a year old female and male Nosy-Be panther chameleon.. When put together, the male began the dance of love. She was turqoise and clay colored until he walked towards her, then her turquoise became black striped (she was not totally black) and she assumed the Kung-Fu pose and then moved away quickly....She did not hiss at him. I then separated them. Should I still have left them together? I have read that if she is not receptive she turns black and hisses....she did not turn totally black...just her turqoise stripes turned black and she ran away...he was in hot pursuit....

ANY SUGGESTIONS? COMMENTS?

Thanx in advance!!!

The female will not turn black when she is receptive and will slowly move away from the male as he follows her...she shouldn't show any signs of aggression towards the male at all and still keep her peach coloration. If she is gaping and turning black and quickly running away...she is not ready yet. Take her out and try again a couple of weeks later until she begins to show receptivity. Hope this helps!!

Try keeping them paired a little longer. Not every female immediately recognizes the male as a breeding partner. It almost seems as if they are surprised at the sight of a male.

Sure signs of her not being receptive are:
1) Darker coloration
2) Gaping and hissing
3) Rocking back and forth
4) Biting back!

You may want to let the male get closer, and see how she reacts. If any of the above happen then separate them. But until you are certain that she is receptive, I would stay and keep a close eye on them.
