Ideas for clearing SPANISH MOSS of bugs/parasites???

psylynt Mar 13, 2005 11:38 AM

I've got a naturalistic setup for a pair of cresteds that I'd like to place some spanish moss in certain areas. Not a bunch, just some here & there around the base of the plants.

Was wondering if anyone knew of a good method to rid the moss of any bugs/parasites that may be in it. Was thinking about putting them in 1 gal. zip-loc backs with a few tablespoons of rubbing alcohol for a day or two. Then, let the moss dry out in the sun for a week or so. Maybe repeat the process.

I was hoping to get some opinions on this idea. Was wondering if anyone knows whether or not the alcohol would kill everything that could be harmful to my little buddies.

Any help is appreciated.

Could try useing steam. If the moss is already dead then just put a little rack over a pot let the water come to a boil and set the moss on the rack, then leave for a few minutes. As far as I can remember notheing can survive in steam. (might make your house smell a little funky, but not as bad as bakeing wood does)

you could try microwaving it for 2 or 3 minutes at a time ( 4-5 times)
if it drying out is an issue you could try putting it in boiling water for awhile as well, then letting it dry out in the sun.

Thanks for the ideas.

My girlfriend often steams broccoli in the microwave by just putting it in a zip-loc bag in the microwave for a few minutes w/ a couple of tablespoons of water in it & leaving a little crack open so it wont explode.

My only concern is I'm wondering if the moss will 'cook' kinda like broccoli does. I wonder if it's going to get all wilted. I'll try a little to test & see how it comes out. I'll post the results here for anyone else who might be interested in doing this.

I'll also try to get some pics up soon of my little buddies. I have yet to post pics on the site. Was wondering if anyone could possibly point me out to a post/link that describes how to post pics. I would appreciate that.

I've had my satanics for about 3.5 weeks now & they're doing really good. They're eating like hogs & getting pretty thick in the belly. My females tail has also unfolded all of the way, I'm very pleased about this.

Thanks again for the responses.
