Controling insects of food plants

uromagnus Mar 13, 2005 12:49 PM

I overwintered a Hibiscus that I use to feed the flowers to the Uro. I put it outside in the warm season and never treat it with any pesticides. I have noticed that it has aphids (spelling?) on it and not sue how to control them. Is spraying rubbing alcohol on it ok. I understand that this kills them and I always wash the flowers before feeding. Just not sure if that would be harmful to the Uro.

lol, i think you were reading my mind. i just recently planted seeds and saw these clear little bug things in the dirt and was wondering if they were bad and wasn't sure what to do about them. this morning i was saying to myself that i should ask the forum if they knew. so all you plant people, can you help?

Years ago I was told to use a mixture of dish soap and water. This kills the bugs. I wouldn't think soapy water is harmful to our babies.
try it, it may work.

If there are any garden centers that sell mantid eggs, you can turn those loose in the area. It's a less direct method, but will help keep all the area healthy and free of aphids. Ladybugs will do the same and some people think they're less "creepy". I like them both!
