Have any you guys ever tried doing you own examinations with a microscope?

yeah, its not too tough. I would highly recomend the book "Understanding Reptile Parasites" by Roger J. Kilingenburg D.V.M. Dr. Klingenburg gives clear instructions and good photographs of what to look for. Still, you might want to ask your herp vet to let you sit in and look at a couple floats and direct smears done right before you try it on your own.
