A question for you researchers out there...

Doug89 Mar 13, 2005 05:42 PM

Hey guys, Just wondering what exactly it is you research? I have researched/observed many different animals but mainly i was focused on insects (couldn't find much else around my house). So how do you go about researching snakes? I was planning to get some worm snakes and reseach/observe them becasue there isn't a whole lot of info out there on them. Thanks!

Personally I research Contia Tenuis. My research is aimed towards more and better available care info right now. For the most part I collect individuals from wild populations and keep them, observe them and record my findings. There are several ways to conduct herp research. It all depends on what you are trying to find. There are several good resources found on google that outline others research and can give you a good starting point by following there lead and or way of doing things. Hope this helps a little.

Jason,

If you haven't already, you may want to check out this discussion about sharp-tails in the rubber boa forum:

Richard Hoyer posted some very interesting info.

Thank you for the link. I seem to remember reading it but it was nice to reread. I have spoken to R. Hoyer on several occasions on this forum and have read a lot of his posts on the
PARC List serve. Definitely knows his stuff. I have spoken to him more about C. Bottae as this is another species of my interest. I collected one Contia at work last week which I plan to keep to help further my research. Can I ask you what kind of clamp you use on the enclosure? My enclosure is of the all glass type, 2 gallon in size. It has a sliding screen top with a pin in which I have lost many a snake from the top not fitting firmly. I have a never-ending supply of large and standard screen top clips so if those would work that would be great. At this point I am keeping the enclosure very basic as the individual is in the quarantine stage. I am using green reptile carpet “essentially Astroturf” with a water dish commercially purchased just for reptiles “the old rock dish kind” and a small log standing upright that I cut from a X-mass tree a coupled years ago. I have yet to offer any prey to the individual but will be tackling that this morning. I did find this morning that some time last night the individual defecated and I was surprised to see it appears to have more vegetation in the fesses than anything ells but maybe this is do to the prey items diet. I look forward to hearing any of your comments.

If your having snakes escape with the enclosure you have now . Why not buy another type like a 5 or 10 gallon tank and get a screen top and those screen lock clips.
Or a kritter keeper, etc just replace what you have.

I have only had one individual escape from this type of enclosure. However I have had several escape from the 10G all glass, screen top type of enclosure. I have followed in the path of aliceinwl and put a clamp on the lid and it works like a charm. Other than the one escape I have had great success using this type of enclosure fore small terrestrial snakes and one escape in about 3 years is pretty good if you ask me.
